Technically a spur of the Bago Yoma range, Mount Popa is an extinct volcano east of Taung Kalat, standing 1519 metres tall. Numerous trails through lush forces lead you to the spectacular summit, and the region is known for its many temples and relics.

The mountain is now a nature reserve and national park topped with a gilded Buddhist temple. Mount Popa has birthed a hundred legends.

It is thought to be home to the most powerful nats which is why it has jokingly been referred to as Myanmar's Mount Olympus. Indeed, 37 nats are depicted on the shrine at the mountain. Many Burmese pilgrimage to Mount Popa every year.
